Grave plans for Lennoxtown
PLANS have been unveiled to create a new cemetery in Lennoxtown.
With spaces fast filling up at Campsie Cemetery, East Dunbartonshire Council has announced plans to spend 1.8million on a new cemetery and extend the amount of plots available.
The new graveyard is to be built just off the existing cemetery, near Lennoxtown High Park and north of St Machan's Primary School.
A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said: "This is the replacement for the Campsie Cemetery and lies on ground just off Lennoxtown High Park.
"There has been public consultation leading up to the formation of the formal planning application and there will now be a 12-week consultation period for the plans themselves.
"The present Campsie Cemetery is reaching capacity. The new cemetery is likely to cost around 1.8million.
"There will be no advance purchase of lairs available. The plans are likely to come before the planning board in the summer for consideration."
The news has been welcomed by villagers and community leaders.
A spokesperson for Campsie Community Council said: "Everyone is delighted that there will be some more plots available.
"We get requests from many people - even expatriates from the likes of Canada, Australia and South Africa - who wish to be buried at the foot of the Campsie Hills."
