Health services campaigner Tom Herbert was a key member of the Kirkintilloch Herald’s long-running Save Stobhill campaign.
Tom was part of a dedicated team of volunteers who fought to have the North Glasgow hospital retained as a general hospital.
Despite a major campaign that saw 43,000 people sign a petition, and the election of Dr Jean Turner to the Scottish Parliament as the independent Save Stobhill candidate, the campaign was unsuccessful and the general hospital and casualty department were replaced with a multi-million pound day hospital (ACAD).
Now Tom, who lives in Lenzie, has taken up a new challenge . . . to get chemotherapy services delivered from the Stobhill ACAD, similar to the Victoria Hospital on the southside of Glasgow.
Tom moved to the area in the 1960s and has been a regular reader of the Kirkintilloch Herald ever since.
As we mark Local Newspaper Week (May 12-18), Tom talks about the role of the Herald and its support for community-led campaigns.
