Hi-tech bid to tackle bigotry in village given boost

A CRUSADING community group has been awarded a share of £230,000 to tackle sectarianism.

The cash for Twechar Community Action, based in the village’s Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre, will be used to produce a DVD looking at the use and impact of sectarian language, as well as establishing a project to deal with online sectarian abuse.

Young people will also get involved in research into the history of sectarianism in Twechar. Just under £27,000 will be available, with £7,000 worth of expert support.

Sandra Sutton, chair of Twechar Community Action, said: “We are delighted with this additional funding – it helps our community start to tackle some of the root causes of sectarianism and address the issue of cyber bullying.”

It is one of six projects across Scotland that will benefit from the Scottish Government funding.

It was announced by Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham, who said: “Discrimination of any kind has no place in modern Scotland and we need to do everything we can to stop it wherever and whenever it occurs, whilst tackling the root causes.

“These six communities are already driving forward work to eradicate bigotry once and for all and are doing some fantastic work.

“We want to support them. This funding will help them further develop the work they have already begun and devise new approaches to tackling sectarianism.”
