High-flying hobby is really taking off in Kirkintilloch

HUNDREDS of people touched down at a high-flying model aircraft club's open day.

The Glasgow Barnstormers recently moved to a new purpose-created site on a field at Birdston Road, just outside Kirkintilloch, thanks to 10,000 in Lottery funding.

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor Charles Kennedy officially opened the new site, before crowds were entertained by aerobatic stunts performed by some of the best radio-controlled aircraft flyers in Scotland.

Highlights included a huge quarter-scale albatross plane, model Red Arrows formation flying and gravity-defying helicopter tricks.

Richard McKnight, club chairman, said: "It was a wonderful day with brilliant weather and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

"People were amazed by some of the stunts and were just standing there with their mouths agape.

"All the flyers put on a great show and we thank them for their efforts.

"We were delighted with the number of people who turned up on the day and managed to double our membership."

The club also sold burgers and drinks, and held a bring and buy sale supported by CMF Hobbies and Glens Models – raising an impressive 618.68 for charity.

Club chairman Richard is pictured with Councillor Kennedy and landowner Jim Pitcairn, who leases the field to the club at a discounted rate.
