Historic club aims to sell off playing field in Bishopbriggs

PLANS have been unveiled to sell off more than an acre of playing fields in a bid to safeguard the future of a historic former pupils’ club.

The land is part of the Allan Glen’s Rugby Club ground, in Bishopbriggs.

It was originally acquired by the Allan Glen’s Old Boy’s Club - now known as Allan Glen’s School Club - more than 75 years ago.

The club was set up in 1923 when 8.4 acres of land in Bishopbriggs were purchased to create playing fields and a sports pavilion. Another 1.4 acres was added in 1935.

Allan Glen’s School, in Glasgow’s Cathedral Street, closed in 1989, but the sports pitches have continued to be used by Allan Glen’s Rugby Club.

Following some legal difficulties in regards to the trust which controls the club’s assets, a new trust has been set up.

The 2012 trust will be run by trustees from the club and representatives from the Trades House, Strathclyde University and Glasgow University.

Changes to the trust conditions mean that there will be less funds available for the running of the club - leading to the decision to sell off part of the land.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Under the terms of the 2012 Trust we are no longer able to enjoy the income from the sports club.

“This was used to subsidise club activities: the lunches, the dinner, the golf outing and any other events in which members are able to participate.

“We are at an advanced stage in our negotiations to agree conditional terms for the disposal of a part of the ground at Bishopbriggs, in essence the second part obtained in 1935.

“The monies obtained from this can allow us to continue to support Allan Glen’s School Club.”

Club president Ronnie Wright said: “I would like to emphasise that this is not a done deal. However, should the sale go ahead it is the intention of the Allan Glen’s School Club to use the proceeds to upgrade the playing and training facilities with improved drainage and car parking.”
