Honour for former Speaker and MP

FORMER Glasgow North East MP and Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin, will take his place in the House of Lords for the first time on Tuesday, October 13.

The Herald can exclusively reveal that Mr Martin's formal title will be Baron Martin of Springburn and of Port Dundas in the City of Glasgow.

From next Tuesday, August 25, Mr Martin, a former sheet metal worker, who has lived most of his life in North Glasgow, will be known as Lord Martin of Springburn.

Mr Martin stepped down as an MP and Speaker of the House in June. He held the demanding post of Speaker for nine years.

Traditionally, House of Commons Speakers move to the House of Lords at the end of their time in the chair.

Mr Martin was particularly keen to have Springburn and Port Dundas incorporated in his new title.
