Hospital campaigner calls for oncology unit at 'new' Stobhill

CALLS have been made for the new ACAD at Stobhill Hospital to have an oncology unit.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have no plans for cancer patients to be treated at Stobhill, but a similar ACAD at the Victoria Infirmary will provide radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Cancer patients in East Dunbartonshire and North Glasgow currently have to travel to the Beatson Unit at Gartnavel Hospital, which recently took on oncology services from the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Stobhill campaigner, Tom Herbert, has close relatives affected by cancer.

He said: "It really is better to have these services locally, as it takes away the pressure of travel for patients who already have the trauma of being diagnosed with cancer.

"Not everybody has a car and, for somebody living in Kilsyth or Twechar, it could take an hour and a half to get to Gartnavel Hospital for radiotherapy five days a week.

"Stobhill would be a perfect place to have an oncology unit.If they can have one in the ACAD at the Victoria why can't they have one in the Stobhill ACAD?""

A spokesperson from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "The consultation 'The Future Provision of Acute Services' was carried out with a wide range of national and local organisations and individuals during 2000 - 2002. It received significant media coverage at the time.

"As a result of this, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's chemotherapy services north of the river are delivered at the new Beatson.

"At the moment, south of the river, day-case haemot-oncology chemotherapy is delivered at both the Southern and Victoria, but all other chemotherapy services are delivered at the new Beatson.

"On completion of the new Victoria, all day-case chemotherapy will be delivered at the new Victoria for patients south of the river with no chemotherapy provision at the Southern."
