Hundreds of children apply for places at schools in Lenzie, Briggs and beyond

A TOTAL of 770 school placing requests were made to East Dunbartonshire Council for 2012/13.

Parents have the right to ask for their children to attend a school other than a local school.

Many requests come from outwith a school catchment area and other local authorities.

Of the requests received, 94 per cent of them were granted. A report to the council’s education committee said that six per cent were refused mainly due to pressure on accommodation in schools, would make it necessary for the authority to employ an additional teacher and the ability to reserve places in schools for children likely to become resident in the school catchment area.

Twelve parents appealed against a decision not to grant a placing request, three of which were upheld.

There were 418 placing requests made for primary schools - 218 within East Dunbartonshire and 200 outwith the area.

Millersneuk Primary, in Lenzie, and St Helen’s Primary, in Bishopbriggs, both received 24 requests, which was the most in this area.

There were 352 requests made for secondary schools - 87 within East Dunbartonshire and 265 outwith.

Lenzie Academy received 102 requests - the highest within East Dunbartonshire.
