Improving Kirkintilloch town centre is child’s play
CITIZENS of the future have had their say on the future of Kirkintilloch town centre.
Children from Oxgang Primary were the latest group to be consulted by East Dunbartonshire Council as it draws up a masterplan for the area.
They were given the chance to say what they like or dislike about the town centre and how they would like to see it improved.
Jacqueline Carson, acting head teacher at Oxgang Primary, said: “The future of the town centre matters to everyone and I would say especially the young people of today, who will see it change as a result of the masterplan being put into action over the coming years.”
Ideas put forward by the children included a cinema and train station.
Pupil Pierce Finnie (11) said: “This is a really good idea as it’s normally grown ups who get to design stuff.”
And Christopher Gower (10) said: “We are planning what Kirkintilloch will look like in the future. We will be able to see the changes for the rest of our lives.”
Oxgang Primary is one of five schools being consulted. Lairdsland Primary, Kirkintilloch High, Lenzie Academy and St Ninian’s High are also involved.
Feedback from the schools, consultation workshops and a survey completed by local people and traders, will help the council draft options for key town centre sites, which will be the subject of further consultation later this year.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “It was interesting to hear what the pupils at Oxgang Primary had to say and to see things how they see them.
“Speaking to them and pupils at our other schools will give us valuable contributions to our consultation and help officers work towards a masterplan for Kirkintilloch town centre.”
