KIRKINTILLOCH historic town hall is to undergo essential work to prevent it from further decay.

East Dunbartonshire Council has agreed to proceed with a tendering process for the work on the B-listed building.

The council announced in the summer that it was finally backing the restoration of the building, which closed in 2004 amid safety concerns. It’s estimated the project could cost in the region of £4.75million.

The drive is now on to source funding for the project - a key part of the Kirkintilloch masterplan to

regenerate the area.

Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise at the council, said: “Our programme refers to work to specific elements of the building to prevent any further decay, which is caused largely by damp and rot.

“This will include the stabilisation of some stonework, roof repairs to prevent further water penetration, the removal of any rotten timbers, some minor structural repairs and the drying out of walls.”
