Jennifer's at the sharp end
A BISHOPBRIGGS woman is set to cross swords with some of the world's top athletes when she takes part in the 2010 Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Jennifer McMillan has been selected for the Scotland squad in the sabre category at the event in Melbourne, Australia, which runs from September 29 to October 5.
The 22-year-old has been fencing for four years and is ranked second in Scotland and 16th in the UK.
Jennifer, from Bishopbriggs, got her first full senior cap for Scotland at a Five Nations competition in London earlier this year. Her other main achievements include winning three Scottish Opens, making the top 32 at two of the French domestic fencing events and finishing in the top 16 of the British Championships in 2009.
She is now looking forward to flying the flag for Scotland in Melbourne.
Jennifer said: "This is the biggest event so far that I have competed in. I'm really looking forward to it and excited about going.
"I've not been fencing that long and some of the girls I've been up against have been taking part for many years."
Jennifer says she would love to represent Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Championships and take part in the 2016 Olympics.
Jennifer, who works as a leisure attendant at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre, has captained both the Scottish senior B team and the Scottish students team.
Before heading for Melbourne she needs to raise 1,500 for flights and accommodation, and 500 for new kit to ensure it meets the safety standards.
