Jobs blow for hundreds of council workers
SENIOR posts at cash-strapped East Dunbartonshire Council have been scrapped as part of plans to chop 250 jobs across the board.
The shake-up has seen four senior members of staff who head up departments leave the council.
This will save over £300,000 and cut the number of senior management posts from 13 down to nine.
Three other heads of services have been made directors, but the council’s chief executive, Gerry Cornes, has stressed that they are not promoted posts.
The move is part of a restructuring programme that will see the council shed around 250 jobs.
The jobs cull is aimed at saving over £4.5million over the next two financial years due to budget cuts.
It’s on top of 300 positions already axed at the council since 2009.
Staff are being offered voluntary redundancy.
The cuts are part of a change in the way the council operates, with a new council office and depot at Westerhill set to replace some of its current premises.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie and chief executive Gerry Cornes said the cuts are needed to protect frontline services.
Councillor Geekie said: “The only other way to make savings to this extent is to stop services.
“We are trying to do this in a voluntary way.
“We’re giving people the opportunity to take a package. It’s not without its difficulties and stress.”
However, the move has been criticised by the council’s SNP group.
