Joining up with the Tories - right thing to do, says Jo

EAST Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson is optimistic that forming a coalition Government with the Tories was the right thing to do.

The Lib Dem MP, who was recently re-elected for a second term, believes that several of her party's policies – from fairer taxation to political reform – are now achievable.

Ms Swinson said: "A Conservative and Liberal Democrat Government is not a Tory Government.

"Liberal Democrat policies for extra money for the poorest pupils and building a new, green and fair economy are on the Government's agenda. This would not have been the case with the Conservatives governing alone.

"The country has clearly said that it does not want one party to govern alone. Working with others to deliver stable government is the right thing to do."

Five Lib Dems have been chosen for the cabinet, including party leader Nick Clegg as deputy prime minister. Ms Swinson could be in line for one of the several Government posts.

She was formerly the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Ms Swinson has vowed to continue to fight on local issues, from the proposals for Bishopbriggs town centre to the regeneration of Kirkintilloch.

She pulled in 18,551 votes at the General Election, closely followed by Labour's candidate Mary Galbraith with 16,367 votes.
