AN under-fire farmers' market should NOT close, say two high-profile supporters.
Concerns have been raised that the market in Kirkintilloch is taking customers away from local shops.
However, MP Jo Swinson and MSP Stuart McMillan have rallied behind the monthly market in the Regent Centre car park.
Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor Charles Kennedy reported that traders were "aggrieved" over the market detracting from trade.
But East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson insists such markets bring benefits to local economies.
She said: "Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market is highly valued in the local area as a source of good quality, fresh produce at a reasonable price.
"There is plenty of evidence to suggest that farmers' markets can bring more business to town centres by increasing footfall in the surrounding area.
"There are also plenty of other social, health and economic benefits to having a farmers' market in the area, which must not be overlooked.
"As the market organisers have pointed out, it's only there for four hours a month. The market attracts shoppers to Kirkintilloch and provides choice for local consumers."
Ms Swinson added: "It would be ludicrous to close it down."
West of Scotland MSP Stuart McMillan, who recently visited the market, agrees.
He said: "During the summer recess I was delighted to see first hand the different stalls Kirkintilloch Farmers' Market has to offer.
"I think the farmers' market is a great way of showcasing local talent and produce as I was able to see stalls, such as jewellery and soap-making, and able to sample locally-reared meat.
"I believe the farmers' market is essential to local communities and strongly support its existence."
Mr McMillan said he had contacted the organisers of the farmers' market to offer his continued backing.
