Kirkintilloch Burgh celebrations fit for The Queen
A SERIES of celebrations should be held to mark the 800th anniversary of Kirkintilloch being granted burgh status – with an invite extended to The Queen.
That is the call from Kirkintilloch North and Campsie councillor Charles Kennedy, who also wants to mark the 275th anniversary of one of the oldest Masonic lodges in the world – Lodge St John Kilwinning in Kirkintilloch – this year.
He believes East Dunbartonshire Council should honour both milestones and has written to Provost Eric Gotts.
King William I (The Lion) granted burgh status to Kirkintilloch in 1211, formally recognising the small settlement that had grown in the area.
Councillor Kennedy said: "The anniversary for Kirkintilloch is of considerable importance. The last main anniversary in the mid-60s was actually commemorated with a visit from Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. That is a possibility we need to look into quickly.
"I would like to see, if possible, a year-long celebration of Kirkintilloch's achievements.
"We are going through rough times, both from the council's financial point of view and also the downturn in business in Kirkintilloch, but that is no reason why we shouldn't commemorate its glorious history and the significant contribution it has made to Britain's industrial past.
"I would like to see all age groups involved – particularly the schools – so our young people can realise the heritage of their town."
Councillor Kennedy also highlighted 'outstanding' charity work done by Lodge St John Kilwinning and said constituents had approached him to ensure this year's 275th anniversary was not missed.
He added: "It is absolutely essential that such a venerable institution within our midst should be accorded a civic reception as a mark of recognition, respect and gratitude."
Provost Eric Gotts told the Herald the lodge had already been in touch and the issue tabled for a discussion on civic matters with group leaders.
He also confirmed there would be celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of burgh status and suggested it could tie in with events such as Kirkintilloch Gala Day and the G66+ Festival.
