Kirkintilloch councillor calls for crackdown on graffiti

A CONCERNED councillor has called for tough action to stop graffiti spraying vandals from turning Kirkintilloch into an eyesore.

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor David Ritchie hit out after offensive graffiti appeared in Peel Park and around the town centre in recent weeks.

Last year East Dunbartonshire Council spent 85,000 cleaning graffiti from buildings and other property across the district, but councillor Ritchie believes that more needs to be done to stop it from happening in the first place.

He said: "We need to take a two-pronged approach. We need to educate the kids so they don't take part in vandalism and take measures to catch the culprits.

"This is about people's quality of life and we need to tackle it head-on for the residents of Kirkintilloch."

He added: "I would encourage people who witness vandalism to go to the relevant authorities and report it to the police.

"People have a right to walk around Kirkintilloch without being confronted by this ugly and offensive vandalism."

Now Councillor Ritchie has called for mobile CCTV cameras to be deployed at graffiti hotspots in a bid to catch the culprits.

A council spokesperson said: "Graffiti is a blight on the landscape of East Dunbartonshire.

"We will remove graffiti from public property as soon as we can, particularly when it is of an offensive nature.

"Where the graffiti is affecting privately owned property, we must receive the permission of the owner before we can take action.

"If we don't receive permission the graffiti cannot be removed.

"For anyone who wants to report graffiti the number to call is 0141 761 4882. Alternatively the can e-mail: environmental.health@

eastdunbarton.gov.uk."
