Kirkintilloch family beg council to move them out of their damp home

AN angry mum is demanding a new council house - after accusing housing chiefs of failing to address severe damp problems.

Caroline Williamson (43), who lives in a flat in Kirkintilloch’s Ellisland Drive, has been battling to get the issue rectified for more than a year.

In July East Dunbartonshire Council officials said they would instruct an independent survey to get to the root of the dampness but Caroline, who suffers from asthma and arthritis, insists she’s heard nothing from them since.

The mum-of-two has been left with thick black mould growing on her walls and says that it is seriously affecting her family’s health.

She said: “The council have said that it’s just condensation, but there’s no way that’s all it is - it’s dampness which has spread everywhere.

“My son Gary is just out of hospital where he had an operation to drain fluid from his brain. It’s not good for him to be in such a damp atmosphere.

“It’s not good for any of us.”

Grace Irvine, the council’s head of assets and property services, said: “A full independent survey has been carried out on the property and the assessment has shown that the problem is being caused by condensation.

“The report also shows that the fabric of the building is in good condition.

“A dehumidifier will be installed in the property for a short time and the tenant will be advised on how to best ventilate it to prevent the problem reoccurring.”
