A GROUP of angry parents have launched a campaign to save their village primary school from the axe.
East Dunbartonshire Council recently decided to proceed to an informal consultation on a shortlist of possible cost-cutting school mergers.
One of the options being considered is to merge Lennoxtown Primary with Craighead Primary, in Milton of Campsie - with a new school serving both villages built in Milton of Campsie.
Within hours of the news breaking parents had set up a ‘Save Lennoxtown Primary’ campaign group, attracting nearly 500 members to their Facebook page.
The group met for the first time last Thursday, with more than 40 people turning up to a hastily-convened public meeting.
Group spokesperson Brian Reid said: “The meeting was well attended and just what we required to move the campaign up a gear. We have more members joining every day.
“Our school is a vital part of our community. It’s where our community spirit is forged, our pride in our village is nurtured, and friendships that last a lifetime are formed. Education is not just a matter of academic achievement, it’s so much more. It’s the links between our churches and the school at those religious times of the year. It’s the link between the Memorial Hall and the school - at the moment the hall has held pantomimes during the day for our school pupils. All this will be lost if these plans go ahead.”
Concerns about the plans include transport between the two communities - particularly for evening and weekend events.
Speaking out against the plans Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor David Ritchie said: “If Lennoxtown Primary is to close pupils will have to travel to Milton of Campsie when there isn’t even a pavement between the two communities.
“How are the pupils meant to get through? We have to be honest with people and communities about these kinds of things.”
There are also worries about a loss of jobs, the future of the playgroup and creche that currently use Lennoxtown Primary and increased traffic on the road running between the villages.
