Lenzie and Bishopbriggs should not be hit by train cuts
RAIL services at two busy train stations could be axed, fear campaigners.
Network Rail is currently carrying out a consultation exercise into its Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP), and Transport Scotland is asking for feedback on its Rail 2014 review - looking into the future of rail transport in Scotland.
But concerns have been raised that services from Bishopbriggs and Lenzie stations to Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa could be cut.
A spokesperson for Bishopbriggs Community Council said: “These services are very important to residents and we don’t want to see them cut.
“At a time when we are trying to encourage people not to travel by road there should not be cuts and, in fact, we would like to see investment in Bishopbriggs.”
Councillor Anne McNair said: “Any cuts in services or drop in the number of trains would be extremely concerning.
“We are looking for assurances that there will be no lessening of services in Bishopbriggs and Lenzie.”
Lenzie Community Council secretary Tom Gray said: “A recent presentation in Lenzie on the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme gave information about possible benefits for Lenzie commuters to Glasgow, but raised some questions about other destinations such as Edinburgh and Stirling.
“Improvements in travel to Glasgow might be at the expense of more train changes at Croy and less direct station-to-station trains.
“If people value the direct Edinburgh and Stirling trains we currently have, they should make sure Transport Scotland knows.”
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “As part of EGIP, Network Rail is undertaking timetabling option analysis to see how best to deliver high-quality rail services across central Scotland.
“This work has not been concluded and no decisions have been made in relation to service patterns in Glasgow or elsewhere.
“Options under consideration include altering service patterns between Lenzie and Bishopbriggs and Stirling at certain points during the day, and increasing peak time services into Glasgow from those stations.”
