Lenzie Jog was a joyful occasion for runners and families
A NEW year got off and running as hundreds of runners took part in the Lenzie Jog series of races on Monday, January 2.
This popular event attracted families and local participants as well as some of the more seasoned and serious runners.
After a couple of years when snow and ice had forced changes to the race, this year the route returned to its usual paths.
In the family-oriented 2k race, Scott Connal was the fastest runner – completing the loop in 7mins 31secs ahead of Duncan McKinney (the boys are pictured on the far right with third-placed Russell Meek).
Rachel Bennie was the fastest female runner in a time of 8mins 36secs.
This event however was more about running together as groups with family teams of different ages participating.
Lauren and Keith Davidson finishing almost together were delighted to be in the top 10 finishers.
This year the 4.5k race proved the most popular, with 117 finishers. At the front there was serious competition between younger members of the Kirkintilloch Olympians.
Gavin Alexander sped away swiftly at the start and despite Callum Heirs and Jeffrey Malluck working together they proved unable to catch Gavin. The top female runner was Alex Lamond, in an excellent sixth place overall.
The 9k race, over two laps, attracts more serious and experienced runners.
This year local athlete Adam Peters showed his continuing improving performance, winning the race in 27mins and 39secs – more than a minute ahead of Allan Ramsey and Mark McColl. Carole Setchell took first female place in a time of 35mins 6secs.
Across the series of races, more than 300 runners took part – making this the largest Lenzie Jog ever.
Suzanne Smith, chairperson of Lenzie Community Council, was delighted with the support.
“It was fantastic to see such a huge turnout of runners of all abilities participating in this community event,” she said. “Huge thanks to the Kirkintilloch Olympians for all the organisation.”
