Litter-busters launch clean-up campaign in village

WAT has been declared on debris, litter and dog mess in Torrance.

Fed-up residents have joined forces over the last two weekends to remove litter from their streets.

Former Torrance and West Kirkintilloch councillor Cathy McInnes is one of the residents who is taking part in the clean-up.

She said: “Torrance was once a village you could be proud of. Lately, I have been appalled at the debris, mess and amount of dog fouling in and around the village.

“There are cans and sweet papers strewn everywhere and alcohol bottles, many broken, and cigarette packets.”

She added: “I do not know if this is a result of council cutbacks, because we always had a ‘barrow man’ who kept the village beautifully swept and clean.”

The group is now asking people to take pride in the village and not litter.

Cathy said: “I would urge everyone to do their bit to keep Torrance the way we would like to see it and a special plea to dog walkers to pick up their mess.”

David Devine, head of roads and neighbourhood services at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “The council has not withdrawn its litter collection service and continues to provide the same service it always has.”
