LOTTERY cash is helping to bring a sparkle to the lives of people young and old in Auchinloch, Chryston, Moodiesburn and Stepps.

Awards for All – the National Lottery’s small grants scheme – has just announced the latest batch of cash helping to improve lives locally.

The grants include:

* Auchinloch Thursday Club – £6,367 to help provide a variety of activities and outings for members, aimed at reducing social isolation.

* Chryston Primary School – £7,419 for laptop computers to boost the learning experience for young people and families.

* Millerston Nursery – £570 for new equipment to help staff and to enhance the learning of the children.

* Foram Lannraig A Tuath in Moodiesburn – £9,250 to engage with a range of community groups on the development of a Gaelic hub in North Lanarkshire.

Jill Woodward, head teacher at Chryston Primary, welcomed the funding boost from Awards for All.

The school has also made a contribution, allowing it to buy 19 computers.

The grant will support a pioneering scheme which involves pupils developing their own ‘e-portfolio’ from P4 onwards.

The e-portfolio is a “living record” of their learning experiences within the school – such as numeracy and literacy – and also extra-curricular success stories involving the likes of sports clubs, Guides and BB.

It means youngsters and staff can update their achievements, and also allows parents to have a better understanding of their child’s educational journey.

Mrs Woodward said: “It’s much more of a living record, because it changes and updates all the time.

“From P4 all of our children are on the path of developing this digital record of their learning.

“The award is welcome news from our point of view and the school is going to benefit as a result.”

Chryston Primary also recently received £3,000 from Education Scotland for 10 iPads – which will help with PE, allowing young people to record and review their activities.

An Awards for All spokesperson, said: “There’s a fantastic range of projects being awarded funding this time around and it’s always surprising to see how diverse the applications can be.

“It’s easy to see what difference Awards for All can make to communities the length and breadth of Scotland.”

The spokesperson added: “This latest batch of grants showcases the range of applications we get, all of which are putting something back into their communities.”
