Makeover plans for town centre move forward

AMBITIOUS plans to transform Kirkintilloch town centre are taking shape.

A draft masterplan is being prepared which will go before councillors in May for approval to consult further with local people.

At the heart of the masterplan, which was drawn up following a series of consultation events, is a rejuvenated town hall and improved access and parking.

The proposals also include using the current Lairdsland Primary site for new housing when the school relocates to Southbank Marina.

The town hall project was dealt a blow earlier this year when a £1.25million funding bid to Historic Scotland was turned down.

However, the council has submitted a bid for another Historic Scotland grant for £470,000 and is waiting to hear about another application for £1.75million to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Meanwhile, £3million has been committed to the masterplan by the council as part of its budget.

Work is already underway with new parking behind William Patrick Library.

Improvements are also being made at Barleybank car park and a new junction made onto New Lairdsland Road.

A new public space outside St Mary’s Parish Church will also be created.

A Masterplan Champions’ Group was formed last year and members include local businesses, community groups and Scottish Canals.
