Malawi farmers congratulate nurseries for selling a tonne of their rice

YOUNGSTERS have helped send children in Malawi to high school by selling a tonne of Fair Trade Kilombero rice - the first group to do so.

Fourteen nurseries in East Dunbartonshire teamed up to undertake the Fair Trade Tonne challenge for Fairtrade Fortnight, buying over a tonne of rice to sell, through the ‘90kg Rice Challenge’, at open days and events held at their nurseries.

The proceeds from each 90kg Rice Challenge allow a child in Malawi to attend high school for a year. The nurseries’ collective order of just over 1200kg will enable 13 children in Malawi to attend high school for a year.

The children and their teachers gathered at TLC nursery in Kirkintilloch where they were congratulated by Malawi rice farmers Howard Msukwa and Henry Kalomba as well as and John Riches and Tracy Mitchell of Just Trading Scotland and Provost Una Walker.

Provost Walker said: “To successfully complete the fair trade rice challenge was a great achievement for our nurseries and the children were delighted to meet Howard and Henry and to find out a bit more about rice farming and children living in Malawi.”
