AFFORDABLE fashion giant Matalan is eyeing up a move to a popular retail park.
The Herald can reveal that Matalan is set to open a new store in the retail park on the outskirts of Bishopbriggs.
Planning chiefs recommended the application be refused, claiming it would mean a relaxation of the 'bulky goods' only policy at the retail park and would divert investment away from Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch town centres.
But councillors at last week's meeting of the planning board overturned the recommendation and gave the application the go-ahead.
Now the path has been cleared for Matalan, which sells fashion and household items, to move into the former Homebase unit at the retail park.
Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the council's development and infrastructure committee, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that another shop is moving in.
"I'm very optimistic that, in the not so distant future, we will see a vibrant retail park. People in East Dunbartonshire will no longer have to travel to other retail parks, but can shop here in Bishopbriggs.
"My understanding is other major retailers will be signing up soon to move into the park."
There's growing speculation that Boots and Next are also considering opening up branches at the retail park.
