Monte Carlo or bust for Kirkintilloch classic car lover

DELIGHTED drivers are gearing up for a major event in the motoring calendar – as they drive for smiles and smiles!

Alan Duncan and David Carstairs have entered the heritage runs of the Monte Carlo Rally, which sets off from the People’s Palace at Glasgow Green on Saturday, January 26.

It will be the third year running that Alan, from Kirkintilloch, has completed the run to Yorkshire.

This year the dad-of-two will be driving his 1974 yellow Toyota Celica, which he has spent six years working on, and took it out on the road for the first time on New Year’s Day.

Alan (53), who is a member of Stirling and District Classic Car Club, said: “I had hoped to go the full run to Monto Carlo this year, but my wife and I are going on holiday. I’m hoping to go next year and take the wife along.

“You always want to make sure your car doesn’t break down at the start ramp when there’s 20,000 people watching.

“When you’re driving off you can’t see in front of you because of all of the flashing lights from the photographers.

“It’s a great atmosphere. Last year in Dumbarton Road, Clydebank, there was crowds, as well as at the Erskine Bridge and villages in Ayrshire.”

David, from Lenzie, will be driving his 1983 Opel Monza to Dumfries. Alex McDougall, from Bishopbriggs, will be showcasing his 1910 Ford Model T during a classic car display in Buchanan Street prior to the start of the rally.

It’s hoped 100 cars will leave from Glasgow, with around 25 making the 2190 mile journey to Monte Carlo.

This will be the third year the event has been held in Glasgow. It made a comeback after it was last held in the city in 1973.
