Morrisons delay welcomed by campaigners fighting for town centre

DELIGHTED campaigners have welcomed new that plans for a new supermarket in Bishopbriggs have been delayed.

Morrisons had been expected to lodge a planning application with East Dunbartonshire Council for its new store on the former Bishopbriggs High School site this month.

However, the supermarket giant says it is still finalising the application.

It is now expected to be submitted next month.

The news has been welcomed by Bishopbriggs Town Team, who had feared the application would be lodged in July when many residents were on holiday.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We are delighted that Morrisons are not going to put in their plans until August.

“We hope this will give them time to make some of the changes that local people thought would improve the plans, for example, making the store smaller and much more part of the town centre.”

Morrisons’ plans received a mixed reaction when they were exhibited at Woodhill Evangelical Church in May.

The displayed plans included a 60,000 square foot store, a petrol station, a community hub, a medical centre and a civic space.

The supermarket giant bought the former Bishopbriggs High School site from Muse Developments in 2010.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “We are still working with East Dunbartonshire Council on the detail of the application.

“As a consequence we now anticipate submitting the application in August.”
