New bins shake-up stores up trouble
WHERE are we supposed to store our new rubbish bins?
That’s the question being asked by concerned residents.
East Dunbartonshire Council is introducing radical new plans which will see households with four bins and a food waste ‘caddy’.
The caddy, a bucket with a hinged locking lid, is for food waste.
There will also be a five-litre food bin designed to be kept in the kitchen and emptied into the bigger caddy.
Food waste will be collected weekly, with all other refuse uplifted every fortnight.
Currently, residents have two bins and two recycling boxes.
But concerns have been raised about the changes, due to start at the beginning of May.
One Lenzie woman said: “Has anyone stopped to think where householders are going to store all these bins?
“I have a bin store, but I won’t be able to fit five bins in it.
“My neighbour won’t be able to get the bins up the stairs from the garden.
“I hardly throw food away and I’m really good at recycling. I don’t use the green bin as I’m already composting.
“What we have at the moment is working. No-one has come round to say how we’re going to cope with this.
“If people can’t get the bins round the back of houses they might be left on the street.”
The refuse collection shake-up is geared towards meeting the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Scotland Regulations and will also save East Dunbartonshire Council cash.
The council’s roads and neighbourhood services manager, Keith Scrimgeour, said: “The new slim line recycling wheelie bins will have the same footprint as the current recycling boxes, however, we do anticipate a small number of residents will have difficulty storing their new bins.
“Advisers will accompany the contractor when bins are being distributed and will be on hand to speak to residents and assist them with any issues.
“The new service will provide an additional 60 litres of storage for recycled material and it is anticipated that the new bins will be much easier to handle than the unpopular box system.”
