New chapter begun at Bishopbriggs Library
A NEW chapter has opened for Bishopbriggs Library following a £400,000 refurbishment programme.
Provost Pat Steel was joined at Friday night's official opening ceremony by local councillor Billy Hendry, regular library user Doctor Hari Seth, and nine-year-old Lewis Prenty.
The library was closed to the public for five months earlier this year, while work was carried out on a new reading and study area, community room, public toilets, learning and suite.
Improved access for the disabled, improved car parking and landscaping work was also carried out as part of the refurbishment programme.
The official opening was welcomed by Bishopbriggs councillor Billy Hendry, who is delighted with the new facilities.
He said: "This refurbishment is a key part of the Bishopbriggs Town Centre strategy, which is now really taking shape.
"I have worked hard with local people to reach this point and the library, both inside and out, is an asset to the town, and one which local people can be proud of."
The brighter, airier looking building has many new facilities as well as a landscaped exterior to make the most of the attractive B listed sandstone property.
Provost Pat Steel is also delighted with the library's new facilities, which include 14 computers with free internet access, almost 30,000 books, 1,600 cassettes and CDs and 750 videos.
She said: "Bishopbriggs Library is hugely popular with local people and this investment by the council has enhanced the services that they can access. It has given them an attractive environment in which to work, learn or simply relax."
Convener of education and cultural services, Councillor Eric Gotts, said: "The library is already well used and I hope that with the new improvements many more people, particularly young people, will use its excellent facilities.
"We must no longer think of libraries as dull, dusty buildings, but as being bright and lively, with CDs, videos and DVDs on loan as well as books." The library opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
The library was in fact built as Bishopbriggs Higher Grade School to mark Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897.
The former Bishopbriggs Town Council relocated the town's library from Woodhall in Balmuildy Road to the present building following the opening by Lanark County Council of the present Bishopbriggs High School building in 1965.
