New teachers left jobless in East Dunbartonshire
JUST three out of 73 newly-qualified teachers in East Dunbartonshire have managed to secure a full-time teaching job for the new session.
According to new statistics only one in seven Scottish probationary teachers who qualified in 2008-9 have secured a full-time post for the new session.
Just 477 out of 3,153 probationers managed to get permanent contracts.
East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson said: "There has clearly been a lack of planning on the part of the Scottish Government, having paid for all that teacher training only to leave these new teachers without jobs at the start of a new academic year.
"After all the SNP's pledges about class sizes, one would hope they had worked out how many teachers were needed and where.
"It must be very worrying for these 70 new teachers that they are having such difficulty finding permanent teaching positions.
"They have undoubtedly worked very hard to become qualified and it is a total waste of resources and talent to leave them unemployed."
A spokesman for the Scottish Government said: "We wouldn't expect every probationer to have a job at the start of the school term as vacancies arise throughout the year.
"This is reflected through the regular General Teaching Council for Scotland surveys, the last in April showing 89 per cent of post- probationer teachers employed in a teaching role."
