New footbridge on the way over river
A WELL-used footbridge over the River Kelvin will be replaced at a cost of around £170,000.
Cawder Footbridge forms part of a public right of way between Bishopbriggs and Balmore. It was condemned by inspectors from East Dunbartonshire Council in November last year.
Extensive corrosion and worries over the bridge’s stability meant it was immediately closed and an independent structural assessment carried out - which found the bridge was beyond repair.
Last week the council’s development and infrastructure committee gave the go-ahead for a new bridge to be built - welcome news for the local residents who presented a petition demanding the bridge be reopened as quickly as possible.
Provost Eric Gotts said that the council should use the opportunity to provide a more user-friendly bridge.
He said: “I welcome the report and the petition on this very well used path and footbridge. The old bridge was not user-friendly as it was stepped on either side, which was not good for those in wheelchairs.
“This could perhaps be improved upon for the new bridge.”
Subject to approval by the development and infrastructure committee, work on the bridge should start by April and take four weeks.
