No verdict yet on missing Kirkintilloch mail
THE alleged hoarding of thousands of letters and parcels bound for homes in East Dunbartonshire is still being looked at by law chiefs.
A Royal Mail employee was allegedly found with a pile of mail during a police raid on his Kirkintilloch home in September last year.
The Herald was inundated with calls from residents who had lost items, including birthday presents and cards.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “The case is with the procurator fiscal and we have not received any further information.
“It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures.”
The spokeswoman continued: “Royal Mail will always prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.”

They can certainly refer persons directly to the PF for action, but if they decline to do so, that's an end to the matter. As for disciplinaty measures, they probably lose their job - but is that enough? Tampering with the mails was usually a serious criminal offence, these days it doesn't even merit a custodial sentence - usually its a 'community' penalty. It would be nice if they were one of the first to experience LowMoss, but that's probably not going to happen.
