No schools hit-list, insists cash-strapped council

CLAIMS that council chiefs have already targeted schools for closure in Kirkintilloch and Lenzie have been vehemently denied.

East Dunbartonshire Council is currently considering the results of a public consultation exercise on the provision of primary, nursery and special schools.

It's claimed that some schools are running at under 60 per cent capacity, with some buildings "reaching the end of their useful life".

However, the council strongly denied this week there was a school hit-list for closures.

One parent said: "There are rumours circulating that St Agatha's Primary, Hillhead Primary and Lenzie Primary have been earmarked for closure.

"I've heard that the Hillhead pupils will go to Oxgang Primary, St Agatha's pupils will go to either Holy Family Primary or St Flannan's Primary and the Lenzie pupils will go to Lenzie Moss Primary."

During the public consultation process last year, every household in East Dunbartonshire was sent a questionnaire.

The council has been rating each of the area's schools on six factors - condition, energy performance rating, migration from zoned school, placing requests (internal and external), sufficiency and suitability.

Many people fear that a 'hit-list' has already been drawn up of schools to be closed. But council education chiefs hit back at the rumours, insisting that no decisions would be made until the comprehensive review process was complete.

A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said: "There is no truth in these rumours and we do not have a 'hit-list'."
