Offenders doing bird – and it’s great news for them and us
OFFENDERS are coming up before the beaks of a different kind in East Dunbartonshire – and they couldn’t be happier about it.
People carrying out community payback orders in the area are helping to make more than 400 bird, bat and barn owl boxes.
Construction and civil engineering company Carillion has donated £2,000 worth of timber and materials.
It is hoped the wildlife retreats will encourage an increase in breeding birds throughout the many local greenspaces – helping fulfil species conservation management targets within the Dunbartonshire biodiversity strategy.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “This generous contribution from Carillion will have a great impact on biodiversity in East Dunbartonshire and benefit the offenders who are taking part in the project.
“Their work will constructively enhance and increase the variety and diversity of local wildlife in the area, whilst developing the offender’s wood-working skills and teaching them about local environmental issues.”
She added: “People living in East Dunbartonshire should hopefully see the fruits of their labour with more species of wildlife in areas such as the Merkland Nature Reserve in Kirkintilloch.”
