AN iconic building in Kirkintilloch could be transformed into bar/restaurant, function suite and delicatessen.

The former ‘Eagle Inn’ at 126 Cowgate had been used by the council’s social services department in recent years, but has lain empty since 2010.

During the 19th century, the Inn provided refreshments for travellers using the Forth and Clyde Canal. Horses used to pull many of the boats were rested in stables at the back of the premises.

In 1891 the building was bought by Archibald Clark, who turned it into the Temperance Hotel – a nod to Kirkintilloch’s status as a ‘dry’ town.

The B-listed building then became the town’s post office from 1929-1970, before being bought by the council who used it as offices until recently.

A planning application has been lodged by Jacca Leisure Limited.

Jacca Leisure Limited is the trading name of the Di Ciacca family - who own a number of eateries in Bothwell.

Peter Di Ciacca told the Herald: “We are looking to create a bar/restaurant, a function suite and an attached delicatessen.

“We are hoping to start work as soon as the planning application has been approved and if everything goes to plan we should be open later this year.”

The business owner says that his decision to move to Kirkintilloch was due to ongoing developments in the town.

“We saw all the new roads and new houses being built and thought from a business point of view Kirkintilloch made sense.

“We’re a family business and cater for families. New houses means new families moving to the area.”

He added: “We are investing a large amount of money and will certainly make sure the building looks fantastic.”
