RESIDENTS are backing an ambitious park and ride rail link.

Plans to make the case for the facility at Westerhill, in Bishbopbriggs, were unveiled in the Herald earlier this month.

Network Rail is currently asking communities for their views on how it could improve its services and its Edinburgh-Glasgow route.

Bishopbriggs Community Council has now thrown its weight behind the Westerhill campaign and written to Network Rail to say a station is ‘desperately needed’.

A spokesperson for the community council said: “This makes sense and it’s staring us right in the face.

“There’s huge scope for a rail link and a park and ride facility and it is not just Westerhill that would be served by it, Kirkintilloch and Lenzie could be too. There is a huge opportunity being missed at Westerhill.”

East Dunbartonshire Council is currently working to develop Westerhill as a business hub.

Councillors including Anne McNair and Gordan Low have already thrown their support behind the proposals.

Network Rail is currently carrying out a consultation into its Edinburgh-Glasgow route, which runs until the end of November.

It’s just part of a wider consultation exercise that aims to shape the future of Scotland’s rail services.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We welcome all comments and suggestions made as part of the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme consultation and we look forward to receiving the community council’s submission, which we will give due consideration.”
