Park-strife – residents fury over plans to build homes on park

DON’T build on our greenspace - that’s the plea from worried residents who are up in arms over plans for new homes on park land.
North Lanarkshire Council was given the green light for the development of 27 amenity houses for the elderly in Lanrig Park, Chryston.
But residents and a local councillor say the site is unsuitable and have raised concerns.
These include fears that there is methane gas in the area; the development will lead to drainage and sewage problems; and the loss of greenspace.
George McIntosh, who lives adjacent to the park, said: “Why build a housing development on somewhere that has got a methane gas problem?
“The park is quite flooded and has been like that for a number of years.
“I’m all in favour of amenity housing, but this is another wee greenspace that will disappear. Once it’s gone it’s gone for ever and future generations to come will have nothing.”
Frances McGlinchey, Independent councillor for Strathkelvin, is not a member of the planning and transportation committee, but is angry that she didn’t get the opportunity to speak when the application was discussed last week.
She said: “There’s problems with sewage when it rains.
“The drainage in Lanrig Park is horrific, that’s why it hasn’t been built on before. There’s methane gas all around the park.
“I recognise we need housing in the area, but this isn’t the way to go about it.
“The council has got to listen to the community.”
Plans for the site include 15 bungalows and three two-storey, four-in-a-block properties providing 12 flats.
A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: “When making a decision on any planning application the committee takes into account all information provided by the applicant and by any objectors.
“In this case, this included information from the Coal Authority regarding the proposed gas protection measures. The report to committee and comments from the planning officer addressed all the issues raised by objectors.”
