Petition to protect picturesque village in the Campsies

PLANS to build nine houses in a well-known beauty spot have been condemened by a group of concerned villagers.

Land and Property Holdings, a Glasgow-based company, has applied to East Dunbartonshire Council for permission to build nine three-bedroom houses in Clachan of Campsie.

Residents living near the land, two fields to the east of the village square, claim that the plans will “destroy the character” of the conservation area.

Mike Wilkinson and Nigel Smith are spearheading a campaign to persuade councillors to show the development the red card.

Nigel told the Herald: “We aren’t against the idea of houses being built there but, considering there are only currently nine houses around the square at the moment, doubling that number is clearly going to have a major impact.

“The fact that all the houses are going to be identical would work in a Glasgow suburb, but not in a place like Clachan of Campsie where all the existing properties look different.

“We would like them to change the plans to include less houses with more local character.”

The campaigners, who have started a petition, are also concerned about the impact the houses would have on parking and tourism in the village.

East Dunbartonshire Council is currently welcoming comments or objections to the development – which will be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the planning board.
