Player airlifted to hospital after double leg break in Kirkintilloch
A FOOTBALLER had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a horror leg break in a match in Kirkintilloch on Saturday.
Waterside AFC’s game against Brightons AFC was called to a halt when midfielder Neil McBride was seriously injured in a 50/50 tackle with two opposition players.
Neil (25) suffered a fracture of his tibia and fibula just above the ankle.
A spokesperson for Waterside AFC said: “Paramedics were quickly on the scene to administer pain relief and stabilise Neil’s right leg.
“Due to the seriousness of the injury and the need to keep Neil’s leg stable the air ambulance helicopter arrived to transfer Neil to the Southern General Hospital.
“As a consequence of the time required to treat Neil on the playing field a consensus was reached between both teams and the referee to abandon the fixture, which will be replayed at a later date.
“We would like to thank the paramedics from the ambulance service and the air ambulance for their excellent treatment of Neil.
“All at Waterside Amateurs would like to wish Neil a speedy recovery.”
It is understood Neil – born and bred in Waterside – underwent surgery on Sunday.
