PUPIL power is being mobilised in a bid to stop a popular teacher being transferred.

Lenzie Academy music teacher Jennifer Hay is due to take up a new post at Boclair Academy in January.

The decision has stunned pupils, who say Miss Hay has been an ‘inspiration’.

More than 500 pupils and parents have signed the petition, which has also been posted online.

One pupil told the Herald: “Moving Miss Hay is going to be a huge loss for the music department. She’s an inspiration and is able to influence pupils to achieve their best in such a positive way.

“Miss Hay has had such a big impact on the school since she joined the academy.”

Sandy McGarvey, East Dunbartonshire Council’s head of integrated support and community services, said: “A decision has been made to move one of the music teachers from Lenzie Academy to Boclair Academy in line with our usual transfer procedures.

“If we have a situation within the authority of surplus teachers in one school, it is normal procedure to move that member of teaching staff to another school where a vacancy exists.

“This ensures best value across the area so that there is adequate teaching provision across the curriculum for all pupils in East Dunbartonshire.

“In any such move, we would always ensure that there is no adverse impact on the timetable.

“Moves such as these take place every year within the authority.”

The Herald was unable to contact Miss Hay before going to press.
