Plenty of people are growing for it – but you could be weeded out!

LONG-awaited allotments in Kirkintilloch are already proving popular – with 63 applications and only 20 plots.

The allotments are due to be created at the Rosebank site in Merkland Drive, Kirkintilloch.

Another 20 plots are also being created but will be used for a therapeutic horticulture project by East Dunbartonshire Council’s social work service.

It is the first time that allotments have been made available in East Dunbartonshire and priority will be given to those who live closest to the site.

Currently 13 applications have been received from people within a mile of the allotments and nine from green-fingered residents between one and two miles away.

That would mean that none of the 41 applicants living more than two miles from the plots would be successful.

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor Charles Kennedy called for more allotments to be provided – across the council area – to satisfy the apparent demand.

He told a meeting of the development and infrastructure committee last week: “Given the fact that there is a proven need for allotments, the council should seek to roll this programme out across East Dunbartonshire.

“For instance local farmers could be asked whether they have land not currently in use which could be used for this type of purpose.”

Kirkintilloch East and Twechar councillor Stewart MacDonald praised council officers for successfully bringing the project to fruition.

The allotments are expected to be ready by May this year.
