Poignant farewell to popular priest

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Kirkintilloch legend.

Hundreds of people, including over 70 priests from across Scotland, attended the funeral of Father John Conway at St Flannan's Church last week.

The 77-year-old, who had served the community in Kirkintilloch since 1991, died while on holiday in Spain.

Youngsters and staff from nearby St Flannan's Primary waited quietly outside as the funeral procession made its way to the Old Aisle Cemetery.

Father Conway was previously at All Saints Parish Church in Springburn and had been the chaplain at the Southern General Hospital and Ruchill Hospital.

Archbishop Mario Conti led the tributes.

He said: "He was a man who expressed his faith by simple acts of kindness – he was a good man, a happy man and he delighted in being a priest.

"Father Conway will be greatly missed."

Catherine McGregor, head teacher at St Flannan's Primary, said Father Conway was "an absolute gem of a man".

She said: "He not only supported the life and work of our school, but was a source of help and comfort to everyone."

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor Charles Kennedy said: "Father Conway was a man of great compassion. He was very committed to the poorer people in society, even to the point of worrying about people."

Kirkintilloch East and Twechar councillor Jack Young added: "Father Conway's death is a great loss, not only to the church but to the community."
