POLICE have confirmed that the body of a woman in her 80s was recovered from the Forth and Clyde Canal at Kirkintilloch’s Southbank Marina on Monday.

The body was found at around 10.35am and the area was cordoned off by police.

Plans to open new council offices nearby were postponed as a mark of respect.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said a post-mortem will be carried out in due course to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances at this early stage.

Already there have been calls for safety fencing to be erected at the most popular parts of the canal.

Gary Abercrombie (19), from Twechar, died after falling into the canal in August 2009 after a night-out.
