Praise for life-saving baby units from grateful mums

THANK you for saving our children’s lives... that’s the heartfelt message from doting mums who are holding a fundraiser in aid of special baby unit.

Toni McCracken and Shona Gamson have praised the dedicated team of medical staff at the Princess Royal Maternity Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit, in Glasgow.

Toni’s 16-week-old daughter, Summer-Mai, was born on October 24 last year. She had difficulty breathing and was put in an incubator and had to be ventilated.

It was later revealed that Summer-Mai had contracted a bacteria, known as group B streptococcus, during the birth. She had also caught pneumonia while in her mother’s womb.

The tiny tot spent a week in intensive care as she battled back to health.

Mum Toni (24) said: “It was terrifying. I thought I wasn’t going to get my baby home.

“By day five she had turned a corner and by day seven she was absolutely fine. It felt amazing to take her home.

“Summer-Mai is doing wonderfully and they are really happy with her progress.”

Toni, who lives in Stepps, added: “The midwife and the doctors were fantastic. They saved my baby’s live. Without them she wouldn’t be here today.”

Toni’s son Connor, now aged five, was born four weeks early and was also treated in the Special Care Baby Unit.

Toni’s friend, Shona, gave birth prematurely to all three of her children.

Her sons, Lewis (9) and two-year-old Harris, were both born at just 28 weeks. Her five-year-old daughter, Isla, arrived at 34 weeks.

Shona (28) lives with her children and fiancé Steven Blair (31) in Moodiesburn.

She said: “I wouldn’t have the three of them if it wasn’t for the staff at the units. They are amazing and I can’t thank them enough.”

The fundraising night will take place in Auchengeich Miners’ Social Club on Friday, March 8, at 7.30pm. It will include a disco, buffet, raffle and auction. For tickets, priced £5, and to donate prizes, e-mail Toni at tonimccracken33@aol.com
