A FUN club for youngsters has gone from strength to strength in the last two decades.

Friday Night Live youth club at Kirkintilloch Baptist Church attracts around 130 young people every week in the P7 to S3 age group.

Now the club has launched a new intitiative to encourage some of its older members to take part in a training programme and become youth leaders.

Around 22 young people have now taken on the role, which sees them assist in the running of the club.

Hugh Lawson, youth team leader at FNL, said: “We were conscious that some of the kids were perhaps getting too old for the club and we wanted to do something which would allow them to still be involved.”

By taking part in the programme the young leaders are automatically enrolled on the Government’s Millennium Awards Scheme for Volunteering and will receive recognition when they complete 50, 100 or 200 hours work.

Hugh added: “The programme is also motivational for them and if they are looking for part-time work or applying to college or university the volunteering will look good on their CV.”

FNL has been running for over 20 years and offers a place for young people in the town to have fun and socialise on a weekly basis.

A whole host of activities are on offer for the kids to try, including indoor football and hockey, crafts, table tennis, board games, air hockey and pool. Group members are also issued with a special ID card which offers discounts at several local businesses.

And for the past three years the members have all taken part in an adventure weekend away and all night lock-ins.
