Probe launched into pool ordeal of eight-year-old
A SHAKEN mum claims her son almost drowned in a popular pool in Kirkintilloch.
Concerned mum Louise Smith complained to East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust following the incident at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre.
A probe has now been launched into the circumstances.
The Lenzie mum says her eight-year-old son, Robbie, was only saved thanks to the efforts of a quick-thinking girl, the same age as him, and is calling for more supervision at the pool.
She said: “Robbie has had nightmares every night since this happened. He fears he would have drowned if he had swallowed one more gulp of water.”
The ordeal unfolded on Saturday, June 9.
Louise had dropped the youngster off with his brother William (11) to attend a club run at the leisure centre every Saturday from 6pm to 9pm.
Youngsters aged eight and above who attend can take part in a wide range of activities.
Louise says Robbie had wanted to go in the pool and when she dropped him off she raised concerns about the fact he could not swim.
She says she was reassured by a staff member that the youngster could go in the shallow end of the pool and lifeguards would be on duty - but Robbie got into difficulties in the pool.
The alarm was raised when a woman outside the pool area banged on a glass window after spotting Robbie was in trouble.
The youngster was saved thanks to young girl who threw a ball at him enabling him to float.
A full investigation has now been launched by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust to find out what happened.
Mark Grant, the trust’s general manager, told the Herald: “We have received a complaint from a parent of a child who attends the Saturday night kids’ club and the matter has been investigated.
“The swimming pools at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre are appropriately staffed during all opening times and have two pool attendants on duty at any given time, with all attendants fully qualified to a national standard and receiving regular ongoing training.”
He added: “Parents should be aware that as part of our Swimming Child Admission Policy children under eight years of age are not allowed to go swimming in either of our swimming pools without appropriate parental/adult supervision.”
