Public transport boost as bus contracts awarded across East Dunbartonshire

A BOOST for bus services in East Dunbartonshire aims to make sure local services are really going somewhere.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has approved a number of contracts worth £340,000 for vital local services.

McColl’s Coaches was awarded a £280,500 contract for two routes until July 2018:

*Service 27 Kilsyth-Glasgow, which provides an early-morning, Monday-to-Friday return journey between Kilsyth and Glasgow, via Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs.

*Service 381 Kilsyth-Twechar, which provides an hourly, Monday-to-Saturday daytime service between Kilsyth and Twechar, via Balmalloch.

In addition, Glasgow Citybus has been awarded a £61,648 contract for service 142 Bishopbriggs Circular, which provides a Monday-to-Friday daytime service between St Mary’s Road and Bishopbriggs Cross. It will run until July 2016.

SPT vice-chairman Denis McKenna said: “Despite the continued squeeze on SPT budgets, we are determined to protect essential services where we can.

“It is a difficult time financially for many people and it is important that we continue to make sure that public transport is available to those who need it most.

“There is a growing number of commercial operators putting profit before people and I’m delighted SPT is able to step in to help protect these routes at this time.”

SPT currently subsidises dozens of local bus services across west central Scotland which are vital to communities, but not provided by private operators.
