Relief as demolition date set for derelict Kirkintilloch health centre

A DISUSED health centre which has become a magnet for vandals and firebugs will finally be demolished in the next two months.

The former Townhead Clinic, in Lenzie Road, Kirkintilloch, has lain empty since a new state-of-the-art healthcare centre opened in nearby Saramago Street in 2009.

In November last year the Herald reported that vandals had been smashing unsecured windows and lighting multiple small fires in the grounds of the building.

Many residents were concerned that a full-scale blaze could spread to neighbouring buildings, including the Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club, which backs onto the former clinic.

Council workers quickly boarded up the broken windows, but news that the building will now be demolished in March will come as a relief to worried residents and club members.

The date was revealed after councillors met to discuss the fate of the clinic in private at a meeting of East Dunbartonshire Council’s housing and community services committee.

Kenny Simpson, the council’s head of housing and community services, said: “The demolition of the former Townhead Clinic building in Kirkintilloch has been out to tender and the council is now in the process of selecting a contractor.

“The chosen contractor should be on site by the end of February with demolition work due to begin in March.”

There are plans to build 17 new flats on the site, but no firm timescale has been established.
