Relief over schools reprieve

MP Jo Swinson has expressed delight at news that no primary schools will be closed in East Dunbartonshire.

Plans which could have seen schools axed in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and local villages have been ditched.

Ms Swinson has welcomed the council U-turn on the non-secondary school estate shake-up.

The council had planned to consult on plans to close schools until the end of 2010 – making a decision early in the new year.

Ms Swinson said: "A great many parents contacted me to express their concern about plans to close as many as eight schools in East Dunbartonshire.

"This is obviously something which would have a huge impact on many people.

"Local parents will be relieved that the plans have been shelved and I welcome this decision.

"I am happy that the views of parents have been taken into account, and the Parent Council Forum will be allowed to examine the proposals in full to see how they were arrived at."
