Former residents of Auchinairn living as far as Australia will return home for a big reunion being organised for later this year.
The idea to bring people from old Auchinairn (1940-1980) back together was sparked by Ron Dempsey, who now lives in Canada, and a Facebook page was started, which now has almost 500 members.
It’s hoped around 150 to 200 people will attend the reunion in September, with former residents from Australia, Canada and America making the journey back to Auchinairn.
A committee has been formed to lead the plans for a dinner with entertainment at Cadder Freestone Club in Bishopbriggs on Friday, September 12. Then on the Saturday it’s proposed to hold an informal evening in Auchinairn Hall with a large photo exhibition.
Alison Walker (52), who was born in Auchinairn and now lives in Bishopbriggs, is helping to organise the reunion.
She said: “It’s been fantastic to get back in touch with people after all these years. Some people have said they haven’t seen one another for 40 or 50 years.
“I was born in the prefabs in Auchinairn and lived there until I was 14. It was a very close knit community. It will be great to see everyone again.”
Jim Miller, lived in Auchinairn until he was 21-years-old and now stays in Cambuslang. He said: “Growing up in Auchinairn was something special. You knew everyone, but the only problem was everyone knew you!
“Getting in touch with everyone and organising the reunion is like living a second time. It will be great to reminisce.”
